This cultural institution in the NoHo neighborhood has a very long and rich history. For some time, the APT was one of the main cultural centers of the city. The most renowned American and world artists came to perform there. Many New Yorkers and tourists confuse the theatre with the Astor Opera House, where the massacre took place. Although the APT has the same name and is located on the same street, it has nothing to do with the riot. It was built in 1831 in the Greek Revival style with huge marble columns. It served as the Astors’ residence. In the 20th and 21st centuries, the APT building was considered one of the oldest in New York City. In 1963, the theatre was recognized as a historical heritage and cultural landmark of the city.

The APT is located in the historic Colonnade Row. It was built in the 1830s. It was a row of nine linked buildings. In the 21st century, the APT is one of the four Colonnade Row buildings that has survived.

The theatre was not only for high culture. It also hosted political rallies and other public events. They made it the center of life in early New York.

Many tourists and New Yorkers confuse the APT with the Astor Opera House. Although the theatre has the same name, it was not the site of the bloody 1849 riot. The riot erupted at the Astor Opera House that does not exist in the 21st century. The riot in 1849 killed about 30 people at the opera. More than a hundred people were injured to varying degrees. It was the bloodiest riot in the history of New York in the 19th century, pitting nativists and immigrants against each other. The Astor Opera House failed to clear its reputation as a massacre opera house. It ceased to exist after a few years. The APT, on the other hand, functioned successfully.

Theatre Development

A local businessman purchased the building of the old APT in the 1960s. The new owner gave the theatre a second life. Since 1968, various plays and performances have been actively staged there:

· The Indian Wants the Bronx starring Al Pacino

· Women Behind Bars

· The Dirtiest Show in Town

· Bad Habits

· The Dining Room

· The Perfect Party

· Larry Shue

· Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris and much more.

Many premieres of plays took place here. The most ambitious playwrights, who often liked to experiment, staged plays here. Thanks to this, the theatre has regained great popularity. Since the early 1990s, the APT has been home to the Blue Man Group, a well-known American performing arts company. The Blue Man Group is widely known for its unusual stage productions that incorporate many types of music and art. The Blue Man Group performers have blue skin. During the performance, they are always silent and appear only in groups of three.

In the 21st century, the APT continues to enjoy considerable popularity among the city’s residents. Although the theatre’s capacity is not large, up to 300 people, its attendance is quite good. In addition, there are many popular cafes and restaurants near the old theatre. The Donut Pub, Sweetgreen, Indochine, Misirizzi and others are among those. All this makes APT a good place to relax and spend an evening.

Not many 21st century New Yorkers know that the Astor Place Theatre (APT) building was completed in the first half of the 19th century.
