HISTORY OF THE OPERA HOUSE. SUCCESS, DEVELOPMENT AND LEGENDARY COMPOSERS<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The theatrical activity of this cultural institution began in 1880. The construction of the theater was funded by the Metropolitan Opera Association and its sponsors. Initially, the shows were held in a building on Broadway. The first of them was performed under the name “Faust” by Charles Gounod in 1883. However, the performances were halted for an extended period of time due to a fire that severely destroyed the venue. The theater was refurbished and reopened in 1966. Following that, the Metropolitan Opera relocated to a new building in Manhattan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initially, the theater presented opera works only by German composers. The majority of them were written by Richard Wagner. To surprise and excite the audience, composers and directors experimented with theatrical roles, plays and spectacular effects. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 20th century, the repertoire of the Metropolitan Opera was expanded by French and Russian composers such as Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky and Nikolai Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov, among others. Around 30 of such premieres have gone viral around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 1904 to 2004, radio broadcasts were held in the auditorium due to an increase in the number of people wanting to visit the theater. In 1995, the system for simultaneous translation of foreign language performances was implemented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIOR OF THE METROPOLITAN OPERA HOUSE<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Metropolitan Opera is a five-arched structure designed in the style of an Italian Renaissance palace. Since 1966, the theater has been housed at Lincoln Center, New York’s largest socio-cultural center. There are excellent acoustics, luxurious halls and several stage venues inside the theater. It has an 80-foot main stage, two additional stages and a 3,900-person auditorium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interior of the theater immediately strikes with its richness. The ceiling is covered in gold, and 11 chandeliers provide great illumination all around so that every spectator can see what is happening on stage even from a distance. The theater also has a beautiful curtain made of golden silk that weighs several hundred kilograms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lobby appears to be equally gorgeous and pricey. The iconic frescoes of avant\u2014garde artist Marc Chagall are the first item that catches the eye. They are visible from the street thanks to enormous arched windows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
