A symphony orchestra was founded in the United States, which is one of the oldest not only in NY but in the whole world. The Philharmonic-Symphony Society of New York, Inc., widely known as the New York Philharmonic Orchestra (NYPO), is one of the world’s most prestigious orchestras. It has played an essential role in American musical life since its inception in 1842. The major American orchestra is colloquially called the “Big Five”. It is situated in David Geffen Hall, the largest art complex in NY, Lincoln Center. The city was home to talented musicians, many of whom came from Germany. Several professional artists, led by Ureli Corelli Hill, who was an American violinist and director, founded the Philharmonic Society of New York. They gave three shows a year to their fans and contributors.

Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 opened the debut concert in the rented Apollo Rooms in December 1842. All the earnings from the active work during the season were divided evenly among the members. In the first year of their activity, the ensemble made $1855 and $2500 for the second year. The new orchestra immediately became successful.

Musicians played the popular music of the era of Beethoven, Hummel, Rossini, Berlioz and Verdi. Inspired by their triumph, the collective planned to build a permanent hall for their performances. In 1853, they created a company for fundraising. The collective faced financial instability, fires and the Civil War, as well as competition with other orchestras in the city.

The Brooklyn Philharmonic headed by conductor Theodore Thomas, was one of the main rivals in the music industry. The NYPO cunningly poached Thomas by offering him a salary of $2500. The financial situation of the company significantly increased when Theodore was a member of the New York Philharmonic

RICH PATRONS AND COMPETITION IN THE MUSIC FIELD

In the 1880s, affluent NY patrons influenced the management of the orchestra. Thus, the position of president began to be held by the wealthiest residents of the metropolis. In 1902, the president of the NYPO became American multimillionaire Andrew Carnegie. The orchestra moved to the new Carnegie Hall, which was donated by Carnegie.

Under the active management of the new president, the orchestra began to attract renowned and talented European conductors. Despite all efforts, NYPO stubbornly competed with other high-level orchestras in the region.

Owing to the substantial financial support from rich sponsors, who invested tens of thousands of dollars in the orchestra, musicians earned a guaranteed $35 per week. Additionally, the orchestra could perform more and go on tours.

American publisher and journalist Joseph Pulitzer bequeathed $500,000 to the New York Philharmonic, significantly expanding the orchestra’s capabilities.

PHILARMONIC SOCIETY OF NEW YORK

Starting in 1923, the Philharmonic Society created its first radio recordings, which reached a wide audience. Shortly after, the orchestra gave several summer concerts at the stadium, attracting all of its fans. In 1928, two main rivals merged in NY, thus, The Philharmonic and the National Symphony Orchestra officially became the Philharmonic Symphony Society of New York.

GENIUS CONDUCTOR ARTURO TOSCANINI

He was the most charismatic, gallant and passionate Italian conductor who created incredible interpretations on the stage of NYPO. Toscanini was appointed the principal bandmaster in 1930, drawing huge crowds to Carnegie Hall ever since.

During the toughest years of the Great Depression, the philharmonic experienced financial difficulties. However, the outstanding Toscanini was paid a high salary ($100,000 for ten weeks of performances). When Arturo Toscanini was not on stage, ticket sales sharply decreased, so the management considered this amount appropriate. Yet other musicians were paid cut to around $90 per week.

During World War II, the philharmonic performed in military towns, army bases and hospitals. The orchestra’s collective donated two ambulances to the Red Cross, which were purchased with company funds.

TALENTED AMERICAN LEONARD BERNSTEIN

Carnegie Hall was planned to be demolished, thus forcing the orchestra to find a new home by 1959. Three years later, the Philharmonic moved to the new Lincoln Center hall. The philharmonic hall was thoroughly designed but had acoustic disbalance. That is why a few months after its opening, major renovations began, which lasted three months and cost $1.25 million.

Changes also took place within the orchestra composition. American Leonard Bernstein became the new conductor. He ardently defended and popularized American music, conducting children’s concerts at the Philharmonic and free concerts in the park. During his tenure, the orchestra began to give more performances while free outdoor concerts attracted a huge audience.

Over time, NYPO became synonymous with Bernstein, who injected a lot of energy into the orchestra’s work. Moreover, at the initiative of Bernstein, the orchestra released around 200 recordings that were in high demand. The orchestra expanded its repertoire, encompassing baroque music and electronic compositions.

Under the direction of the brilliant Leonard, the orchestra reached its musical peak.

Every season, the ensemble interacts with millions of fans not only in New York but also in different corners of the world. They successfully create recordings for radio and television, as well as organize charity concerts under the open sky. The New York Philharmonic plays an important cultural role not only in New York and in the United States but also globally.

Continuing its glorious 180-year history, the New York Philharmonic goes on to compose inspiring music and flawless performances that are enthusiastically received by its audience.

More than 180 years ago, a historic event took place in New York.
