His parents were Esther Towner and Johnny Williams. His dad was a jazz drummer and percussionist who played in Raymond Scott’s quintet. From an early age, John was immersed in the world of music, frequently attending his father’s rehearsals and beginning to learn various instruments.

In 1948, they relocated to LA, where the boy enrolled at North Hollywood High School, graduating two years later. He then attended the University of California, LA, while simultaneously studying with Italian composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco.

In 1951, he was drafted into the U.S. Air Force, serving for three years. Afterward, John returned to NYC and found work as a jazz pianist. As a pianist, he contributed to scores for Some Like It Hot (1959) and To Kill a Mockingbird (1962). He later collaborated with composer Henry Mancini and played piano for television shows.

During this period, he began composing his own music for TV. His scores were featured in shows like Gilligan’s Island and Lost in Space. Additionally, he started writing and arranging music for the big screen, with his first feature film credit being Daddy-O in 1959.

In 1967, John Williams received his first Academy Award nomination for the score to Valley of the Dolls.
