He not only composed music in various genres but also made significant contributions to education and administration. As a child, Schuman played the violin, but he later developed a passion for jazz and Broadway music. This diverse musical taste profoundly influenced his work, allowing him to seamlessly blend American jazz and folk traditions with the harmonic styles of earlier eras. His cantata, “A Free Song,” became the first musical composition to win a Pulitzer Prize. His parents, Samuel and Rachel Schuman, were Jewish. They named their son after William Howard Taft, the 27th U.S. President, but affectionately called him “Bill” at home.

During his childhood, he learned to play the violin and banjo, but his greatest passion was baseball. Musically, in high school, William organized a band called “Billy Schuman and His Alamo Society Orchestra,” where he played bass guitar. The band was often invited to perform at weddings and other celebrations. For young William, music was more of a hobby, and he didn’t initially plan to pursue it professionally.

In 1928, he enrolled in New York University’s School of Commerce. Simultaneously, he took a job at an advertising agency. He was pursuing a business education and saw his future there, yet he never abandoned music. He co-wrote songs with his friend E. B. Marks, and after meeting poet Frank Loesser, they collaborated on dozens more. Schuman even composed the music for Loesser’s well-known song, “In Love with a Memory of You.”

This creative duo produced many songs for radio, vaudeville, and nightclubs, but they never quite managed to create a major hit at the time. By the age of 25, William Schuman had written over a hundred songs, but he continued his business studies, not considering music his profession.

The Day That Changed Everything

William entered the world of classical music relatively late by the standards of his time. He was 19 when, on April 13, 1930, he attended a New York Philharmonic concert conducted by Arturo Toscanini. The program featured works by Mendelssohn, Brahms, and Castelnuovo-Tedesco. William was captivated by the sheer number of string instruments playing as one. What he saw and heard at the concert so profoundly affected him that the very next day, he decided to become a composer.

Following this revelation, Schuman abandoned his business studies and focused on learning music theory. To make up for lost time, he constantly attended concerts, and in 1933, he enrolled in Teachers College, Columbia University. There, Schuman earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Additionally, he studied music at the Malkin Conservatory and composition with the esteemed composer Roy Harris at the Juilliard School.

During this period, the musician also qualified as a conductor and became a composition instructor at Sarah Lawrence College. Alongside this work, William Schuman served as publications director for G. Schirmer, Inc., a renowned American classical music publisher. He also composed many of his own works, which began to attract attention in the music world by the late 1930s.

Through Harris, Schuman met conductor Serge Koussevitzky, who, in 1939, conducted Schuman’s “Symphony No. 2” with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Koussevitzky’s Foundation also commissioned Schuman’s famous “Symphony for Strings” in 1943. As part of this collaboration, Koussevitzky conducted the premieres of the overture “American Festival,” “Symphony No. 3,” and the cantata “A Free Song.”

Schuman’s Third Symphony earned the first prize from the New York Music Critics’ Circle, and “A Free Song” was honored with the inaugural Pulitzer Prize for Music. These works brought him widespread recognition in the musical world and cemented his reputation as a talented composer.

William Schuman’s Compositions

The composer left behind a substantial body of work. In this role, he introduced several innovations, such as consolidating courses in music theory, history, and repertoire into a single course called “Literature of Musical Materials.” Furthermore, he aimed to attract prominent American composers to the faculty. He also founded the Juilliard String Quartet, composed of talented faculty members, which became a leading ensemble not only among educational institutions but across the U.S.

Leveraging his influence as an administrator, he persuaded the developers of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts to include Juilliard in its complex. In 1962, he became president of Lincoln Center, succeeding John D. Rockefeller III, and held the position until 1969.

During his tenure, the composer significantly and positively impacted the world of performing arts. He initiated the creation and development of several important projects and programs, including the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Film Society of Lincoln Center, the New York Philharmonic’s summer “Promenades” concerts, and the Student Program. Schuman actively promoted American music, encouraged performances by American composers, and advocated for the commissioning of new works by them.

Despite his extensive educational and administrative activities, he remained, first and foremost, a composer, continuously writing new works and refining existing ones.

The End of William Schuman’s Life

In 1968, William Schuman suffered a heart attack.
