David O. Russell is a perfect example of this theory, as his creative style was influenced by his relatives, his upbringing, and his family’s opportunities. The future director grew up in Larchmont, where his character was formed. Although young David had many interests, no one could have said for certain that he would grow up to be a director. The boy read many books, ran the school newspaper, and dreamed of becoming a writer. And while he also watched a lot of movies, immersing himself in their worlds and studying film magazines, David was always sure he would dedicate himself to the written word. This is no surprise, as his father and mother both worked at the publishing house Simon & Schuster. As a result, the family home was always filled with literature and people who loved books.

David Russell attended Amherst College, where he studied English and political science. He dedicated his life to these fields after graduation. The future director went to teach in Nicaragua, worked as a waiter and bartender, and eventually found his way to his current profession. It happened while he was working as a community organizer. David taught grammar in Lewiston and Boston, helping people unlock their potential and drawing inspiration from observing the residents. He also filmed nearly everything that caught his keen eye. This led to his first experiences creating short documentary films. In this search for his calling, Russell realized he wanted to make movies. The director’s story is also unique in that he never attended film school; as the artist always tells journalists, he has been learning on the job his entire life.

David O. Russell shot his first short film in 1987 about a bingo parlor in Maine, titled Bingo Inferno. His next work was the 1989 film Hairway to the Stars. Both works were screened at the Sundance Film Festival and gave a boost to his career, as the artist received a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts. Although the funds were not used for their intended purpose, he created the film Spanking the Monkey, which helped the director make a name for himself and cemented his image as a controversial artist. Following advice from Harvey Weinstein, David didn’t waste his newfound recognition and began creating more and more films.

Notable Works

David O. Russell’s first major work was the 1999 comedy Three Kings. The film touches on the Persian Gulf War but is not without humor, as it follows three American soldiers trying to get rich by finding gold. The director has always been interested in politics, so he wanted to make a big picture about a world of conflict, where violence intertwines with backroom deals and the lives of ordinary people. He was able to express himself through his work and draw public attention, because, as David has said, in every comedy, there is a bit of tragedy, and vice versa. The film garnered an incredible amount of critical acclaim, box office success, and fan loyalty, allowing it to remain at the pinnacle of Russell’s filmography.

A particularly special film for the director is Silver Linings Playbook, which premiered in 2010. Besides starring Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, and Robert De Niro, this work is also very personal for David Russell. The film tells the story of Pat Solitano, who has bipolar disorder. He tries to live his life, get things back to normal after a stay in a psychiatric hospital, enjoy time with his family, and connect with a woman battling depression. The director took on the adaptation of Matthew Quick’s book because he had long planned to make a similar film for his son, who was diagnosed with emotional disorders back in 1999. For David, this work proved to be his most difficult, but also his most important. His son even plays a role in the film as a curious neighbor who asks about the main character’s problems, although in real life, the roles are reversed. Most importantly, Matthew Russell is extremely proud of his father’s work.

It’s impossible not to mention American Hustle, the comedy released in 2013. It tells a story about the ABSCAM scandal, con artists, and human flaws. David Russell explores each character, the psychology of their actions, and their relationships. He offered viewers what the director himself calls a “rich life experience.” The artist decided to take on this story while still filming Silver Linings. It was love at first sight, as he was fascinated by the characters and the scale of the narrative, and he immediately began thinking about the actors who could star in the film. The result was another world from David O. Russell, which brought the creator even more acclaim.

It’s impossible to describe all of the director’s works with a single word or fit them into a specific genre. The artist takes on whatever he likes and adds his own signature touch. He has countless nominations for the Academy Award, Golden Globe, and BAFTA to his name, and has brought many accolades to his actors, though he has also experienced a few failures. But it is the highs and lows that shape him as a professional in his field.

The Difficult Genius

Besides his work, David Russell also draws attention for his personality. Aggressive, brilliant, creative, rude, strange, candid—the man is a combination of all these traits.

The director’s temperament and creative process are surprising, as he does things others aren’t used to seeing. As the artist himself says, he is the author of emotionally rich, comedic, and often personal films. Russell loves to observe people, so residents from all over the country can become his characters. The man draws inspiration from everyday things, to which he gives special meaning, believing that every moment should be enjoyed. He learned this from a very young age. His family is a mix of incredible personalities with different views on life, religion, and everything else in the world. This was the environment the director grew up in, and his parents never forced him to take sides, so he was able to explore everything from a young age. His works are often called chaotic, but the director passionately explains every moment, as everything is orderly to him. And the most important trait for David has become humor, which is real and can be both dark and light.

David’s Initiatives

David Russell expresses his opinions not only through films but also by initiating important projects. A special topic for him is and always will be his advocacy for mental health. That is why the artist constantly tries to draw society’s attention to the issue and organize useful events for people. In 2013, David met with then-Vice President Joe Biden regarding a mental health bill, and a year later, he participated in a discussion at the Paley Center for the Media. Another beneficial initiative is the Glenholme School, which educates children with depression, anxiety, ADHD, ASD, and more. The director says the team creates an infrastructure where these children can feel creative, compassionate, inspired, and guided toward independence.

Another area of his activity is supporting young talent. Back in 2002, Russell joined the Ghetto Film School, which provides children with opportunities to explore art and cinema, shoot films in other countries, and study the craft. David is very dedicated to the school, tirelessly asking his colleagues and friends to speak to the students, even if it means waiting a long time. The school has expanded to include a branch in Los Angeles and, after the film Joy, organized a program to help women who aspire to work in media.

David O.
