She wrote a true hit that became a fantastic screen adaptation. The book and the series complemented each other perfectly, each boosting the other’s popularity. When the author was just starting her bestseller, it was already predicted to be a huge success. Cecily’s story was called a satire of youth that was both entertaining and mocking. However, it was so sensational and controversial that the author often had doubts about publishing it. The decision to release the book and the series was made during a meeting with editors. Author Cindy Eagan gave the author a confidence boost when she acquired the series and ordered a 17-book run. Her only question was whether librarians would be scared off. And that made sense, as the series was candid and provocative. The books immediately began to be pirated, and concerned parents were outraged by the content.

If Cecily von Ziegesar’s bestseller had such an impact on society, the scale of the series is impossible to describe in words. Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage took on its production. They were the ones who created the story that so many viewers around the world came to love. At the beginning of filming, the creators had only read the first book, but later, various installments were open on their desks to highlight different moments. Although many critics accused the team of departing from the events in the books, the author herself was satisfied with the series. Stephanie Savage emphasized that many of the main storylines were preserved, but the writers had to adapt the stories to television requirements. Gossip Girl premiered in 2007 and ran for 6 seasons until 2012. During this time, the show didn’t win a ton of major awards, but that didn’t stop it from joining the list of legendary series. As Josh Schwartz said, the show became something more than a television project. It captured the attention of many viewers, created a cult around a certain lifestyle, and captured the zeitgeist. Gossip Girl managed to burst onto viewers’ screens, tell an incredible story, and leave a good aftertaste.

In 2021, the fans’ requests were heard, and the team gave new life to the familiar story. The reboot of the series aimed to touch on more important topics, explore modern realities, and introduce new characters. Despite great intentions and a noble goal, the reboot failed to gain popularity and was canceled in 2023. This means that all viewers are left to rewatch the iconic 2007 version.

Filming and Casting

The series tells the story of the lives of New York’s elite who attend a private school on the Upper East Side. Wealthy parents, their privileged children, the school’s hierarchy, relationships between friends, and the battle for the title of queen bee—this is what the team introduces us to. Gradually, we get to know each character better, begin to sympathize with and understand them. The rich kids reveal their secrets and problems, while the ordinary students show that you can be happy in Brooklyn too. They grow up, and their stories become deeper. The main characters are Serena van der Woodsen, Blair Waldorf, Dan Humphrey, Chuck Bass, Nate Archibald, and others. They are played by Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Penn Badgley, Ed Westwick, and Chace Crawford.

Each of the actors lived out their own incredible story in the series and became a true sensation. Blake Lively was the first to be cast, after countless people wrote to the team about her. The actress found many common traits with her character. After her previous project, she was planning to enroll in college, but the series creators intercepted her, promising to work out a suitable schedule. Similarly, her character Serena van der Woodsen also decided to find her purpose after high school instead of pursuing further education. After Blake Lively, Leighton Meester was cast, and she recalled a long audition process. However, she had no choice, as the actress wanted to move to New York and seized the opportunity. An interesting fact is that she had to dye her hair dark because one blonde was enough. According to Stephanie Savage, Penn Badgley is the most similar to his character, although the actor gets annoyed by the comparison. Ed Westwick came in and impressed everyone at the audition while reading for the part of Nate. However, the producers had other ideas and gave him the role of Chuck. The role of Archibald went to Chace Crawford.

Next, the actors and the film crew faced hard work, many good moments, and some difficulties. The main task was to make the audience fall in love with the show’s story, as the actors were not yet famous. The team succeeded in this, as New Yorkers gradually began to recognize their favorite characters and imitate them. Blair and Chuck became a legendary couple, with Schwartz feeling the chemistry between them immediately. The friendship between Serena and Blair, the family relationships of Rufus, Dan, and Jenny, the love story of Lily van der Woodsen, and other plot twists were no less interesting. And the fact that Dan was Gossip Girl? The actor playing him found out right before shooting the scene, which stunned him. As Leighton Meester said, to achieve this success, they had to work 16 hours a day, 5 days a week, for 6 years.

The Show’s Impact

More important than the show’s ratings was its impact on the audience. It began to dictate fashion to all of New York, showcasing a desirable lifestyle and incredible stories. This is what made it a cult classic for years to come.

In addition to the quality of the series, the team also carried out a successful marketing effort, which included both a promotional and a fashion campaign. One famous promotion was the provocative “OMFG” marketing campaign, which caused a stormy reaction and forever secured Gossip Girl‘s place in the market. Many companies refused to display the slogan, and city residents protested the broadcasting of sex, drugs, and alcohol. However, the team tirelessly conveyed its message and did not back down. Their next step was an ad campaign featuring the most common negative reviews: “Every parent’s nightmare,” “Mind-blowingly inappropriate,” and others. And it’s impossible not to mention the provocative scenes followed by the phrase WTF, which stood for “Watch This Fall.” Despite numerous criticisms, the series knew its target audience and continued to promote itself.

It was a great joy for any designer to be featured in Gossip Girl, as all items from the show were immediately sold out. The show’s costume designer, Eric Daman, said that the team tried to set trends from the very beginning. And they succeeded wonderfully. Young fashionistas watched the main characters’ outfits and hunted them down, and the mention of any brand automatically boosted demand for it. Viewers would bring magazine clippings with items they saw on the show and buy the same clothes. Headbands, brooches, leather jackets, ties, loose shirts, scarves—everyone tried to replicate Serena and Blair’s style. The CW helped viewers in this by posting links to all the clothes on its website.

Eventually, the team faced a problem with spoilers, as fans shared their own theories and inside information. It became impossible to film on the streets, and the show’s fame spread far beyond the US, leading to adaptations in other countries.

Another Character

The special atmosphere of the series would not have been complete without another character: New York City was another character in itself. The show’s creators insisted that filming take place in the city, even though it was expensive and difficult. The team was offered the chance to recreate all the locations on a studio lot in Los Angeles, but they chose the metropolis to represent it authentically on screen. And this played a significant role, as viewers fell in love with the lifestyle presented in the series. Where they go, what they eat, where they shop and relax—fans were interested in everything about life in Gossip Girl. And the producers were happy to please the discerning viewers. While at first no one knew about the show, fans soon began to follow the film crew, and various establishments opened their doors to the creators.

The temporary home of the van der Woodsen family at the beginning of the series looks incredible. We are talking about the New York Palace Hotel, located at 455 Madison Ave. The Humphrey family home is a loft at 455 Water Street, located in one of Brooklyn’s most popular neighborhoods. Chuck Bass’s lair is, of course, the Empire Hotel at 44 West 63rd Street. Viewers can also admire Central Park, where Blair fed the ducks and went ice skating; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the lunch spot for the school’s elite; Grand Central Terminal, where everyone first saw Serena; and other famous locations.

One of the most popular series about life in New York is Gossip Girl.
