Carney subtly tells stories about musicians and, with incredible ease, transports the viewer into a magical atmosphere that is quite difficult to describe.

In Begin Again, Keira Knightley plays a young singer, and Adam Levine plays her singer-boyfriend with whom things aren’t working out. Mark Ruffalo is a producer going through a tough time in his life, as his family life has fallen apart and his professional career is in a steep decline. The characters of Knightley and Ruffalo are two lonely people who randomly meet and decide to record an album.

The producer sees something special in the main character; as a singer and songwriter, she sees this as a chance for a breakthrough.

Throughout the plot, Knightley and Ruffalo help each other, reflect on life, plans, and music, and are fired up by their idea. They are united by an absolute love for their craft, and all of this is conveyed through songs and the New York subways and streets where the entire film takes place.

The film is rich with stunningly beautiful scenes that, combined with the soundtracks, make you fall in love unconditionally. It’s a picture about creativity, freedom, and feelings.

“New York, I Love You” (2008)

New York, I Love You is a romantic anthology film that combines several love stories taking place directly in the metropolis.

The film features a diverse ensemble cast and explores various aspects of love, relationships, and connections in bustling New York City.

Interestingly, the film doesn’t have a single director, as each segment was filmed by a different filmmaker. New York, I Love You captures the atmosphere of a city where diverse stories of love and passion unfold.

In New York, I Love You, the metropolis is truly the main character, as the film frequently showcases magical streets and diverse buildings that captivate with their beauty.

“Taxi Driver” (1976)

The film Taxi Driver is the “big daddy” of all films. It is Martin Scorsese’s iconic crime-drama thriller about a taxi driver, Travis, filled with rage and hatred—lonely, desperate, and disillusioned after returning from the Vietnam War.

The filming took place in the summer and involved a large number of crew members.

During this difficult summer shoot, accompanied by unbearable heat and a garbage strike in Manhattan, nothing short of magic was captured.

Travis Bickle, the film’s broken hero, wanders through an ungovernable Greenwich Village and unpredictable streets.

In the story, Travis Bickle suffers from insomnia and, to not waste time, gets a job as a taxi driver. Working nights, Bickle encounters things that make him even more of a misanthrope. Adding fuel to the fire is his failed attempt to court a girl named Betsy: on their first date, he can think of nothing better than to take her to an adult film. Ultimately, Travis is left with no choice but to buy four guns to release the anger consuming him from within.

The film truly conveys the criminal atmosphere of New York, so if your soul desires to watch a film not just about skyscrapers and beautiful streets, then Taxi Driver is the perfect choice.

“Escape from New York” (1981)

In the near future (the year 1997), Manhattan has been turned into a maximum-security prison, inhabited by murderers with mohawks, cunning crooks, gun-toting femme fatales, and other madmen.

John Carpenter’s wonderfully creepy thriller shows an unforgettably grim “Big Apple” that stays with you for a long time. For example, the striking opening shot—a slow rise over the prison wall—resembles a “Welcome to New York!” postcard. The film’s eyepatch-wearing anti-hero, Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell, the epitome of sneering masculinity), uses the Twin Towers as a landing platform for his glider—an unintentionally loaded image. The New York Public Library and Grand Central Terminal are trash-strewn headquarters for villains. And all the bridges are mined! Scene after scene, Carpenter satirizes the de jure fears of a crime-ridden New York. The film shows a completely different side of the city.

“Before We Go” (2014)

From its very first scenes, the film might remind you of Begin Again. You can compare them, and you’ll find that they are two incredibly atmospheric pictures. It’s worth noting, however, that the plots are completely different. The film Before We Go is not directly related to music, though music does set a certain mood that makes you remember this story with special tenderness. In Before We Go, New York is slightly different—not a music capital, but a city of emotional turmoil.

Captain America and the charismatic Carol from Star Trek very convincingly play two strangers. The characters show how sometimes just one night can hold so much meaning. A night filled with reflections on what’s eating them up inside, about life, relationships, and all of it through the streets of New York.

Evans showed his best side as a director, considering this was Chris Evans’s directorial debut. All the romance, the unhurried but sincere dialogues, the simplicity, and the visuals themselves are so skillfully presented that they deserve your attention. This film will appeal to those who love “cozy” cinema. You really want to believe that such stories can happen in real life, when a seemingly random encounter becomes vitally important and helps to put your thoughts in order. This film is truly better than many pop-culture love dramas.

“Rear Window” (1954)

It’s no secret that a favorite pastime of New Yorkers is watching each other through their windows.

The film Rear Window was shot on a set recreating a Manhattan courtyard. In the plot, the main character, Jeffries (played by James Stewart), is recovering from a broken leg by peering into the lives of his neighbors, who include a dancer, a sculptor, and a composer. But one day, things weren’t so colorful and cheerful.

When his binoculars catch a potential murder, events become tense. The film captures the atmosphere of a New York apartment, and it is definitely worth your attention.

“A Rainy Day in New York” (2019)

American director Woody Allen has a special love for New York, and he, like no one else, is able to interpret life in this huge city.

The film A Rainy Day in New York is a light film with young actors, beautiful scenery, and Allen’s characteristic theatricality in every frame.

The main roles are played by Chalamet and Fanning. She is a college student, full of energy and a zest for life, who gets a unique opportunity to interview her idol, which she has no intention of missing. He is also a student, but with the manners and worldview of an adult, as if he has already lived for half a century. Throughout the film, we see the characters get into situations that force them to rethink their priorities. And each of them ends this day in New York in their own way.

The film features understandable humor, as well as a musical score that gives the film a special atmosphere.
