The Modern Era
Early in its history, the NYTW team established the right values, goals, and plans for the future. Year after year, new creators, leaders, and other community members joined the collective, successfully realizing all that was envisioned. Now, it’s almost impossible to keep track of all the theater’s work, as so much is happening. Looking at its achievements and successes, every year can boldly be called a peak year. The team refers to themselves as artists, producers, audience members, and neighbors. And all these roles help them create so many different products.
New York Theatre Workshop educates and nurtures the younger generation. The theater’s staff is deeply committed to developing theatrical culture in the country, and they decided to start with children. Creating theater, building critical thinking, broadening perspectives—the team teaches all this and much more. The community collaborates with Fordham High School for the Arts, Gramercy Arts High School, and other educational institutions throughout New York City. Students attend morning performances, have the opportunity to participate in workshops, and visit the theater’s educational studio. They join master classes, discussions, and mentorship seminars. And NYTW is open to collaboration with any school that wants to implement this educational program.
An integral part of the theater’s work is, of course, its creative workshop, which offers a multitude of interesting projects. The team supports many groups, ensembles, and companies seeking to develop. For this, they are provided with specialist consultations, rehearsal space, office facilities, connections with theater experts, and all necessary resources. The creative spirit and potential of artists are also nurtured through the presentation of new materials, which takes place every Monday at 3:00 PM. Here, anyone can showcase their own experiments and receive honest feedback. In the summer, the team practices escaping the bustling life of New York. Everyone has the opportunity to continue working on their project far from the noise, explore new places, and gain experience from other collectives. Furthermore, everyone has the chance to try something new, learn valuable insights from guest speakers, and receive fellowships.
The theater actively maintains its social media pages, develops its website, and encourages people to attend performances. With ticket discounts, free events, and support for neighboring businesses, NYTW strives to improve society, starting with itself.
The Staff on NYTW
The most important resource at New York Theatre Workshop is its people. The theater employs casting directors, managers, producers, lawyers, actors, playwrights, directors, designers, and a large number of other professionals. That’s why in 2019, a project was launched for the institution’s 40th anniversary, sharing people’s stories. It soon grew beyond a single year and continues to this day, as the staff always has something new to say.
For example, Jean Passanante, the theater’s first artistic director, recalls that its creators embodied the idea of a non-profit organization dedicated to independent creativity. For director Ed Sylvanus Iskandar, the most valuable thing he gained within the theater’s walls was friendship. Playwright Jordan Seavey remembers the homely atmosphere at the institution, where the windowsills were always lined with potted plants. For actress and poet Dael Orlandersmith, being part of this creative community is extremely important, as here she can draw inspiration and give it to others. She also notes the approach where every contribution is valued. Anaïs Mitchell recalls her work on Hadestown, when the team left New York and slowed down to achieve a better result.
