Manhatta: Serious Cooking, Sixty Floors Above the Harbor

View restaurants usually ask you to forgive the food; Manhatta asks you to keep up with it. Danny Meyer’s aerie on the sixtieth floor of a Financial District tower pairs one of the great panoramas in New York — harbor, bridges, the Statue of Liberty holding her torch at eye level — with a kitchen that has quietly become a destination in its own right.

The Concept

Union Square Hospitality Group opened Manhatta in 2018, naming it after Walt Whitman’s love poem to the city, and rebuilt it after the pandemic as a sharper, prix-fixe restaurant. Since 2025 the kitchen belongs to Michele Brogioni, a Tuscan-born chef seasoned in Milanese fine dining, whose tight, curated menus finally gave critics a reason to talk about the plates as much as the glass. The formula: French-rooted technique, global accents, USHG’s famously warm service.

What to Order

The dining room runs a composed prix fixe — three or four courses built from dishes like foie gras torchon, fluke crudo, corn tortellini, butter-poached lobster and a dry-aged duck with real gravitas; charred savoy cabbage with mushroom merguez carries the plant-forward flag, and the toasted-rice mille-feuille closes elegantly. The bar side is the à la carte playground: a dry-aged burger with koji onions and Cooper Sharp cheese, an open-faced lobster roll on brioche, fried chicken sandwich with gochujang honey, oysters and madeleines. Wine director Sydney Fusto’s list roams the globe; the borough-themed cocktails are better than the gimmick suggests.

The Space

One entire floor of glass. The dining room faces the harbor’s silver sweep; the long bar and lounge take the bridges and Brooklyn’s rooftops; sunset moves through the room like a slow spotlight. The décor stays deliberately quiet — up here, the city is the wallpaper, the chandelier and the floor show all at once.

Who It’s For

Proposals and milestone dinners, out-of-town guests you want silenced mid-sentence, FiDi closers, and bar-stool romantics chasing golden hour with a burger and a martini.

How far ahead can I book? Reservations open 28 days out and sunset slots vanish first; the bar and lounge welcome walk-ins.

Is there a dress code? Nothing enforced — smart casual is the room’s natural register.

What’s the budget-friendly route? The bar side: same glass, same views, à la carte burger and lobster roll instead of the prix fixe.

Does it serve brunch? No — weekends bring a prix-fixe lunch in the same fine-dining key, not an eggs-and-pancakes affair.

When is the light best? Book just before sunset: you get daylight, the golden hour and the city switching its lights on, all in one seating.
